  • 2025-2026 Bronze Chapter Activity Award

    image

We're proud to share that our chapter has earned a 2025-2026 Bronze Chapter Activity Award from the IMA | Institute of Management Accountants.

This award recognizes chapters for the volume and variety of programming they deliver, including in-person CPE events, webinars, and networking activities, and it reflects everything our members accomplished together this year. Some of the highlights included:

    • Webinar | Behind The Numbers: The First Draft of the Investor Story
    • Webinar | The Intersection of GenAI and Sustainability
    • IMA Connect: Singapore Networking Event

This recognition belongs to every member who showed up, contributed, and made this year's programming successful. A special thank-you to Honey Chopra, Cheryl Marie Yu, Ken Ip, CMA®, CISA®, PMP®, and Srishti Chopra for their leadership throughout the year.

  • 2026-27 El Paso Chapter meetings

    Stay tuned for upcoming meetings:

3rd Wed. of the month starting Aug./Sept.

  • Carl Smith, former Global Chair, 9/3/51 - 5/22/26

As champions go, Carl Smith was a veritable standout within the IMA!   His colleagues at the IMA Hartford Chapter and the IMA NorthEast Regional Council are particularly grateful as we directly benefitted in so many memorable and impactful ways from his participation and leadership.

He was involved for many years with the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) during turbulent and steady times and most assuredly during robust years of growing membership and growing CMA counts within the U.S. and Globally.  We fondly remember his serving IMA Hartford Chapter as our President from 1983-1984.  He followed this achievement by becoming a National Director in 1986 and then a National VP from 1989-90.  He was Chair of the Board of Regents from 1996-1998 and ultimately Chair of IMA Global from 2005-2006, a crowning achievement.

Carl had a huge impact on the IMA, including helping to get Kim Wallin voted into the Global Chair position via a floor vote at a 2002 San Diego global conference (chapter member Carol MM happened to be there for that one).  She along with others felt that changed the trajectory of the IMA in a very positive way.  Carl became Global Chair two years after Kim.

Many chapter IMA members also remember Carl serving as an exam proctor when they sat for the CMA exam which took place at the University of Hartford where he was a professor.  He diligently promoted the CMA amongst his students, knowing that the skillsets they required to be successful within businesses and other organizations squarely lay with the management accounting curriculum.  It’s impossible to know how many students took that plunge to earn that CMA title, just as Carl himself had done, and what heights they too reached and are still reaching within their own career paths.

He was a mentor to Lynn T and other members encouraging us to go for Global service with IMA.  We expect the seeds he sowed to continue to inspire many more of his IMA colleagues and the students who he educated throughout his many years of teaching.   Do we think he’ll take over auditing the ‘heavenly’ books?   Wouldn’t surprise us at all!

    Birth: September 3, 1951

    Death: May 22, 2026

    Carl Stuart Smith

    OBITUARY

Carl Stuart Smith, 74, of Simsbury, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026 at UConn

Hospital, surrounded by his wife of 37 years, Marjorie, and his daughter, Lauren (Washington, DC), after many years of bravely fighting complex medical issues.

Carl was born on September 3, 1951 in New Haven, to Emanuel and Evelyn Smith (both pre-deceased). He leaves behind his brother, Michael Smith, his sister-in-law, Andrea (both of North Haven), and his nieces Emily (Newington) and Carrie (New Orleans, LA), along with many loving cousins.

He was raised in Hamden, and attended Hamden High, followed by the University of Connecticut for his B.S. in Accounting, followed by an MBA and a Ph.D., also in Accounting. He was extremely accomplished in his field, holding numerous additional certificates and designations, including a CPA, CMA, and CFM. He worked at Cohen, Rosenfield & Lieberman CPAs early in his career, opened his own practice in 1981, and was an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Barney School of Business at the University of Hartford for 40 years, before retiring in 2021. He was involved for many years with the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), serving as Chair of the organization from 2005-2006, the Chair of the Board of Regents from 1996-1998, a National Director in 1986, and a National VP from 1989-90.

Carl had a deep love for the New York Yankees, despite marrying a Boston-born Red Sox fan (true love!), and watched almost every game; he attended many games with Lauren by his side. He loved to travel, and passed that love down to Lauren as well; they traveled to Spain, Switzerland, and Germany together, along with many locations in the U.S. with Marji, too. Their best memories were on the beach in Dennisport, MA. Earlier in his life, he had a passion for photography and even built a darkroom in his house; later, he was always at Lauren’s soccer games with his camera. He had a witty, sarcastic sense of humor and found his match with Marji. He was steady and committed to his family and friends, and always quick with a joke.

The family sends their deepest gratitude to the ICU, step-down unit, and hospice staff at UConn Hospital, who were wonderful and treated Carl with dignity to the end. They also send a thank you to Carl’s dedicated team of doctors, who cared for Carl for years and extended his life, allowing his family and friends to enjoy more time with him.

A funeral will be held on Thursday, May 28, at 11 AM at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation (FVJC), 55 Bushy Hill Road, Simsbury. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to New England Donor Services, an organization close to their hearts.

  • Global Update to Chapter Board Structure & Volunteer Recruitment

After gathering feedback from volunteers and planning committees around the world, IMA  is updating the chapter board structure and volunteer recruitment process to broaden participation, reduce pressure on current leaders, and create a clearer, more sustainable path forward for chapters.

    What's Changing

A Simplified Board Structure: We're moving to four elected board positions, replacing the current structure of president, secretary, treasurer, vice president of engagement, and at-large directors.

The new four elected positions are:

Chapter Chair - Oversees chapter operations, strategy, and volunteer engagement
Chapter Treasurer – Manages finances, reporting, and compliance
Chapter Administrator – Handles administrative tasks and IMA coordination
Chapter Communications Lead– Supports communications, events, and member engagement

Submit your application for one of these four board positions here.  Note: Current board members will need to re-apply

Flexible Volunteer Roles: We're also creating volunteer roles with less required time commitment to give members more options to contribute without taking on a full board seat.

Submit your application for one of these flexible volunteer roles here. Note: Current non-board/committee members will need to re-apply

Term Limits: Elected officers may serve a maximum of four consecutive years in a single position before taking a one-year break. Exceptions can be approved by IMA staff if a replacement hasn't been identified.

IMA Will Now Handle Volunteer Recruitment: IMA staff will recruit volunteers for chapters across all regions.

Applications are open now and will close April 30.

Thank you for your continued support of your local IMA chapter!

Submit your application for a board position here.

Submit your application for a flexible volunteer role here.

  • Remembering Michael Schor

    image

In honor of IMA | Institute of Management Accountants Member Appreciation Week, the IMA - Greater Philadelphia Chapter would like to share the following remembrance, written by former Chapter President Rob Miele, in honor of our friend and Chapter President, Michael Schor. 🙏 Mike was an enthusiastic and committed leader and volunteer for many years and will be dearly missed by all.

    From Rob:
I met Mike Schor about six years ago at an IMA student night. He thought Philly would be a fun Chapter to join, so he transferred. His infectious laughter soon became a regular part of our Board meetings.

Mike's leadership proved invaluable for navigating those days of quarantines. Before long, he was organizing and presenting well received webinars. He energized and grew the Board, and our monthly video calls became known as the Chapter Chat.

Getting back to live events meant that we got to see Mike's warm personality up close. For CPE or social gatherings, Mike was happy to be there, often with his wife Lori helping him with his presentation, or welcoming people as they came in.

For a few years, right up until our last Chapter Chat in December, Mike fought hard to project a positive view of his health. A round of treatment, another remission, and the old vitality seemed to come roaring back.

Sadly, we lost Mike on Wednesday, January 28th. Remembering our Warrior, I guess, will help us face our own struggles with the same bravery. But right now, we’re just missing him, as are Lori, his students, colleagues, and his many friends, who are all so glad we got to know Mike.

  • SF Article on Data Insights - Transformative accoutig processes

Using the Digital Team to Enhance Profitability and Control
With the right approach, your digital team can drive efficiency, strengthen control, and uncover profit opportunities by analyzing outliers.

Content Type: Article | Reading Time: 11 Minutes
From data noise to financial insight
Modern organizations generate more financial and operational data than ever before, yet information hides in plain sight. Within enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and related platforms, millions of transactions flow each month. And while the transactions are all balanced, the process is not guaranteed to be accurate or efficient. Among this volume of data lie outliers that deviate from expected norms — transactions, entries, or process behaviors. These anomalies often point to control gaps, process inefficiencies, or emerging risks that quietly erode profitability.

To uncover these hidden insights, finance leaders are increasingly turning to the digital team of data scientists, IT specialists, and process analysts. By applying advanced analytics and machine learning (ML) tools, organizations can detect patterns that traditional controls overlook. Whether it’s identifying duplicate vendor payments, unusual pricing, or abnormal posting patterns, outlier detection transforms routine financial data into actionable intelligence.
